Description

Suxamethonium chloride Injection is an ultra-short acting, depolarising, neuromuscular blocking agent. It is used in anaesthesia as a skeletal muscle relaxant to facilitate tracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation surgical procedures.

What are the side effects of suxamethonium?

The use of suxamethonium chloride is associated with many other adverse effects, such as fasciculations, myalgia, potassium release, changes in the heart rate, increases in intragastric and intraocular pressures, and malignant hyperthermia.

When should suxamethonium be avoided?

Thus, suxamethonium may be used safely in patients with chronic hyperkalemia that is only moderate (i.e., potassium <6.5 mmol/l). In patients with acute hyperkalemia or chronic hyperkalemia that is severe, suxamethonium should be avoided.
